The Derecho storm that raged across Iowa in August left in its path damaged crops as well as destroyed grain storage facilities. Iowa State University Professor of Agriculture and Biosystems Engineering Charles Hurburgh says a lot of corn was killed off and left light test weights in many fields. He says it’s not advisable to store what corn is remaining for any great length of time.
He says corn should not be stored outside on the farm on the ground.
Hurburgh says there should be enough storage available even though many bins were damaged or destroyed.
Hurburgh says the next issue many Iowa growers are facing are in the Western half of the state where drought conditions are popping up.
