The outlook for spring planting in Iowa is improved over 2019 with less rain and snow over the winter. Iowa State University Extension Field Agronomist Joel DeJong says last year at this time farmers were already facing spring flooding.
However, he says with the soils saturated there is no room in the profile for additional or even normal spring rainfall.
NOAA’s 90-day weather forecast calls for above normal temperatures, but also above normal precipitation in the region. DeJong says that could quickly change the planting outlook.
DeJong says farmers in Iowa did get fall fertilizer put on, but not much fall tillage work was done so that will narrow the window for planting this spring.
