President Donald Trump is scheduled to meet Saturday with China’s President on the sidelines of the G-20 Summit in Osaka, Japan. Iowa Soybean Association President Lindsay Greiner isn’t holding out much hope however for some type of trade resolution coming out of that.
He says the trade war and the retaliatory tariffs have hurt soybean farmers a great deal so any talk of putting on more tariffs probably won’t make any difference.
President Trump has threatened possibly imposing $300 billion in new 25 percent tariffs next month on Chinese goods. Greiner says what the President needs to concentrate on is getting trade pacts with other countries including Japan to help ease the trade war pain farmers have experienced.
Greiner isn’t the only one pessimistic about a trade resolution with China at the G-20 summit. Ag Secretary Sonny Perdue also says he doesn’t think a trade deal is likely either.
