The Iowa Soybean Association is hoping state lawmakers this session will approve a fuel tax increase to help fund needed repairs of the state’s infrastructure. Association President Brian Kemp who farms near Sibley says that upkeep is needed for growers to get their product to market. He says one of the major concerns is the repairs needed in many rural areas of the state.
Soybean Association Policy Director Carol Balvanz says they’ve been trying to get a fuel tax increase for the past four years. She says they’re even willing to look at other ways to fund road and bridge repair and upkeep.
State Representative Josh Brynes of Osage thinks he can get a 10 cent fuel tax increase over three years passed in committee but the real sticking point is in the State Senate. Balvanz says there may be an opportunity in the Senate but it needs to be backed by both parties.
Senate Transportation Committee Chair Tod Bowman of Maquoketa says he doesn’t have the votes to pass a fuel tax hike but is willing to work with Byrnes and Governor Branstad to try and get it done.
