Some members of Congress are looking to the omnibus budget bill as a way to include a provision to repeal Country of Origin Labeling. The WTO ruled this week that Canada and Mexico can seek over a billion dollars in retaliatory damages because of the trade distorting law. Iowa Senator Joni Ernst says she backs full repeal of COOL.
Ernst says she won’t support in any way the voluntary labeling bill being pushed by Senators John Hoeven of North Dakota and Debbie Stabenow of Michigan. She says that won’t satisfy either Canada or Mexico as they’ll go forward with retaliation.
She says she’ll work with Senate Ag Chairman Pat Roberts to drum up support for COOL repeal.
