More and more food companies are preparing to comply with Vermont’s biotech labeling law. Meanwhile, when Senators return from recess, one of their major pieces of unfinished business is passing a national biotech labeling bill. Iowa’s Senior Senator Chuck Grassley says he thinks that’ll be a tough task and reaching a compromise between voluntary and mandatory supporters will be difficult.
Grassley also says that with so many companies falling in line with Vermont’s law which goes into effect in July, that’ll create somewhat of a roadblock for Senators trying pass a national biotech labeling regulation.
Prior to taking their Easter break, Senators failed to get enough votes for cloture on a voluntary biotech labeling bill. Many Democrats opposed that measure and want a mandatory standard put in place.
