Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley’s measure to curb the rising rate of farmer suicides contained in the Defense Authorization Bill is awaiting Presidential approval. That may not happen however as President Trump is threatening to veto the measure. Grassley says he has enough votes to override any possible veto and sees his legislation being enacted.
He says his measure provides training for people who interact with farmers to be able to help them through their stressful times.
Grassley says data shows that the rate of suicides is higher in Rural America than in other parts of the country.
Grassley’s legislation would provide a partnership be formed between the Department of Health and Human Services and USDA to create a $3 million campaign to increase public awareness of farm and ranch stress.
