Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley wants the U.S. Justice Department’s Anti Trust Division to review the proposed acquisition by JBS of Cargill Pork. National Pork Producers Council President Elect John Weber, an Iowa farmer, says he’s not opposed to having that deal reviewed.
Weber says while agriculture isn’t the only industry seeing increased concentration, there are some positives with that type of movement.
Weber says he hasn’t heard of any concentration problems with Smithfield recently being acquired by a Chinese company. He says he’s heard more positive comments especially about producers now having a large amount of product that can move to new customers.
