The number of public water systems in Iowa has continued to drop in the last decade. The executive officer of the Public Drinking Water Program, Diane Moles, says part of the reason is smaller systems connecting to larger rural systems.

Moles says some of the systems that fit the definition are not exactly what you might expect. They are called transient systems, because the people don’t always live where they are served.

Moles says Iowa is known as a small system state, as 93 percent of Iowans get their water from a system that serve 33-hundred people or less.
