Iowa Pork Producers Association voting delegates met last week during the Iowa Pork Congress and approved a few resolutions. Past president, Kevin Rasmussen says one of the resolutions that passed dealt with the Pork Strategic Investment Program, or SIP. Rasmussen says pork producers are encouraged to contribute fifteen cents per hundredweight to the SIP program. Rasmussen says the SIP investment is different than the pork checkoff. The Iowa pork producers past president says checkoff funds can only be used for research, education, market development, and promotion projects. He says the SIP funds are used for lobbying efforts. Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds recently appropriated $40 million to help fund the new Iowa State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. Rasmussen is grateful for the money to go to the state diagnostic lab and says it will not only help pork producers, but all livestock and poultry producers.
