Iowa Pork Producers Talk About PEDV At Recent Convention

Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus was one of the issues talked about by pork producers attending last week’s Iowa Pork Congress.  Incoming President Jamie Schmidt of Garner says they’re trying to learn as much about the disease as possible so they can better protect their herd’s health.

Schmidt says there currently is no vaccine available for PED virus but they’re hoping they’ll come up with one in the near future. He says another concern of Iowa’s pork producers centers around market reporting.

He says they’d like to see some type of 24 hour rolling average price reported rather than just hearing no report due to confidentiality. He says another concern of pork producer members is audits.

Schmidt says his Association also wants to see the state legislature fully fund both the extension service and the Iowa State University Diagnostic lab.
