The Iowa Pork Producers Association and its county groups have donated 8500 pounds of pork to the five food banks in the state. IPPA Board member Trish Cook says the donation is meant to help the many Iowa workers who are jobless due to the coronavirus pandemic and to help the food banks keep up with the surge in demand.
She says it’s simple to cook pork and helps meet consumer’s protein needs. Cook also says with so many people staying at home, this helps with that need.
Cook says pork producers follow the WE CARE principles for caring for their animals and this effort takes that a step further by producers caring for their communities.
Each food bank is getting 1700 pounds packaged in one pound quantities. The Food banks receiving the donation include Food Bank for the Heartland serving 93 counties in Nebraska and Western Iowa, as well as the foo banks in Des Moines, Sioux City, Hiawatha and Waterloo.
