The comment period closes today on the Iowa Department of Natural Resources proposed rule regarding the implementation of the clean water act and permitting for animal confinement operations. The Iowa DNR has been following a work plan issued by EPA to make sure they’re properly enforcing the Clean Water Act. Iowa Pork Producers President Jamie Schmidt of Garner says his group already submitted comments to the rule and they back it as has been proposed.
Schmidt says his group is against adding any more stringent regulations and wants to see the federal statute followed as directed.
Schmidt says his group’s members have been weighing in at the six meetings being held around the state by the State Environmental Protection Commission and DNR on the proposed rule.
