China’s Vice Premier is in the United States this week visiting with U.S. officials as the two sides try to work out a trade dispute involving tariffs. Iowa Pork Producers Association CEO Pat McGonegle thinks that’s positive. His organization and 10 other Iowa Ag groups and the Governor recently asked the Trump administration to resolve the trade war.
He says China is a critical market for U.S. pork producers and a speedy resolution is needed so there’s no more economic damage from the tariffs.
McGonegle says the pork industry has been suffering from the tariffs and he’s hoping the two sides can reach a substantive agreement on this week’s discussions.
Earlier the Trump administration had placed tariffs on Chinese steel and aluminum and then China retaliated with tariffs on U.S. pork and also announced duties on soybeans.
