Iowa Oat Harvest Just Beginning

Oat production is no longer as prominent as it was a few decades ago.  In northwest Iowa, Joel DeJong, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Crops Specialist says although there are many fields where the oats have ripened, he has yet to see many oats harvested.  DeJong says most of the forage and hay production in northwest Iowa have completed its second cutting.  Like other areas within the region, DeJong says the quality of the hay is good, however, farmers had a reduced amount of hay for their second cutting.  The Iowa State University Extension crops specialist says farmers this year are seeing relatively no diseases with their corn and soybean fields.  DeJong suggests farmers to continue to scout their crops.
