Iowa state lawmakers adjourned their 2017 session over the weekend but failed to approve a long-term water quality funding source. State Farm Bureau President Craig Hill says it’s a real disappointment.
The legislature approved increased annual appropriations for both the water quality initiative and soil conservation efforts in fiscal year 2018. However, Hill says the $10.5 million approved is not enough.
He says the nutrient reduction management strategy and voluntary conservation efforts by farmers are both working well. However, more money is needed to be able to make even more progress.
Iowa State Agriculture Secretary Bill Northey thanked state legislators for approving increased annual appropriations for fiscal year 2018, but is also disappointed there was no long-term funding strategy.
