A survey conducted between March 1, 2014 to March 1, 2015 by the Iowa Realtors Land Institute has just been released revealing falling land values. Realtors Institute Spokesman Kyle Hansen of Nevada, Iowa says statewide, land values decreased by an average of 11%. He also says cropland values were down 7.6 %.
Hansen says based on their survey, they expect land values to continue falling in order to correct from previous years, in which they reached higher levels. He says this land price correction is positive, especially for younger producers trying to get into the business.
Hansen says that factors contributing to current Iowa farmland values include lower commodity prices and limited amount of land on the market. He also attributes the fall to a lack of stable alternative investments, cash on hand, and increasing interest rates.
