Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer is asking Ag Secretary Sonny Perdue to delay issuing the U.S. Domestic Hemp Production final rule until 2022. He says they need to allow the hemp pilot rules to remain in effect from the 2014 farm bill until the final rule is released. Iowa Hemp Association President Dr. Christopher Disbro says the federal hemp rules need to go out rather than wait.

Schumer says delay of the final federal hemp rule is needed due to the effects of the pandemic. Disbro says despite the pandemic, Iowa lawmakers have approved rules to allow the hemp industry to advance.

He says Iowa’s hemp industry is in its early stages but so far has found some markets for hemp.

Disbro says it’s more important the feds get the final hemp rule right rather than getting it out swiftly.
