An Iowa FFA member has been selected as one of four members across the nation as a Star Farmer Finalist. The Star Farmer award is the highest honor that can be bestowed upon a FFA member. Blake Frascht is a member of the Charles City, Iowa FFA chapter. He farms with his father and other family members but has developed his own farming operation. His Supervised Agriculture Experience involves cattle feeding and crop production. Frascht says he has acquired much of the needed farm equipment on his own, but trades labor with his father. He admits being a national star farmer finalist involves detailed record keeping for your operation. Frascht says during this last month is when he had the interview process to determine if he will be the named National FFA Star Farmer. Frascht says the questions from the judges ranged from record keeping to daily chores on the farm and making marketing decisions. Frascht says he will continue with his farming operation following FFA, but he credits the youth agriculture organization for preparing him for his career in farming, as well as for life. The National FFA Star Farmer candidate says he has incorporated conservation measures into his farming operation that include planting cover crops and strip tillage. Frascht will learn Friday evening at the national convention if he is named as the National FFA Star Farmer.
