The President of the Iowa Farmers Union says there was some discontent noted by farmers and ranchers at the polls this week. Aaron Lehman says there are several factors that led to that discontent including lack of passage of a farm bill, the trade war and large ag mergers.
He says they’re monitoring to see what happens with the farm bill at the national level and how the recent changeover in the U.S. House to control of the Democrats impacts that.
Lehman says his group is looking forward to working with Mike Naig who won election as Iowa’s Secretary of Agriculture. He had been filling that position since former Secretary Bill Northey left for an Undersecretary’s job at the USDA.
The election results in Iowa were mixed with Republicans Kim Reynolds winning the Governor’s race, Mike Naig the Secretary of Agriculture’s race and Democrats picking up gains in the U.S. House.
