Iowa Farmers Union members gather in Des Moines today and tomorrow for their annual convention. President Jana Linderman says environmental and water issues highlight their key issues for this year’s meeting. She says her members want to see farmers work with EPA and the Corps of Engineers to find a workable Waters of the U.S. rule.
Linderman says their other major water issue is trying to work with the Governor, Legislature and State Ag Department in making the nutrient reduction management strategy work. She says there needs to be adequate funding for the program and some efficiencies need to be built in.
Linderman says their members are also quite concerned about pesticide drift problems and want to know more about the new farm bill’s crop insurance arc and p-l-c programs. The organization will also hold elections for President and Board directors at the meeting.
