Today is lobby day for Iowa Farmers Union members as they meet with lawmakers at the State Capitol in Des Moines. IFU President Jana Linderman says they have three top priorities including a measure on local foods, addressing pesticide drift and improving water quality. She says they’re backing HF 427 which would create local food economic development programs for farmers.
Linderman say another growing concern for their members is pesticide drift and they’re pushing for Senate Bill 1190 which would provide insurance liability protections for producers.
She says they’re also teaming up with other groups to find a solution to water quality concerns and are weighing in with legislators on that.
Linderman says that’s a different approach than the one advocated by Governor Branstad which calls for shifting some education funding to pay for water quality improvements.
