It won’t be long before Northwest Iowa farmers start planting with much of the early work expected around April 15 or 20. Iowa State University Extension Field Agronomist Joel De Jong says the recent dry conditions have helped many growers doing their pre planting chores.
De Jong says while field surfaces are dry the subsoil is looking pretty good. He feels good about the chances of growing getting the needed moisture recharge they need once they begin seeding.
De Jong says right after planting farmers will need water to re wet that top surface so the seeds will get started and get those root systems growing down to where that water is stored.
