Iowa Farmers Concerned About Additional Flooding, Planting Delays

Flood waters are receding in Iowa, but farmers are still concerned about flood waters returning and the impact saturated soils will have on planting delays. Iowa State University Extension Agronomist Joel DeJong says it is too early for farmers to panic, but he does expect problems with timely planting and soil loss.

He says the soil profile is already saturated enough flooding and runoff are likely with any additional moisture.

DeJong says the flooding brings sand deposits to the fields which must be cleaned up and that could take some time.

DeJong advises producers not to get overly concerned about late planting yet as favorable weather could change the situation quickly. He says farmers should get ready for planting to take advantage of narrow windows when it does dry out.
