Iowa Farm Bureau President Craig Hill has been asked to testify before the Senate Agriculture Committee Thursday in support of a repeal of Country of Origin Labeling. Hill says COOL is not in compliance with WTO rules and needs to be thrown out.
Hill says there are several problems with the labeling law that is leading to possible retaliation and disruption of trade.
Hill says Canada and Mexico have already targeted several states for retaliation and those are where the key votes are regarding COOL.
Earlier the House passed a measure repealing the labeling law and now it’s up to to the Senate to follow suit. The U.S. Trade Representative’s office has asked the WTO for arbitration on their ruling against Country of Origin Labeling. No retaliatory tariffs can be instituted until that process is completed.
