A report commissioned by the U.S. Dairy Export Council that’s been sent to the President, Administration Officials and members of Congress outlines concerns with the need to obtain market access in Japan. Western Iowa Dairy Alliance Executive Director Scott Schroeder says getting that access is critical for dairy farmers in Iowa and the entire United States.
The U.S. is losing market share to other countries that have joined Japan in the Comprehensive and Progressive Trans Pacific Partnership. Schroeder says if the U.S. can gain a bilateral pact with Japan, that could help overcome some of those problems.
He says the U.S. is very efficient in dairy production and needs an outlet for that product. Schroeder says that’s another reason it’s important to get and expand global markets.
The Dairy Export Council report projects export losses for the U.S. dairy sector without having an agreement with Japan of up to $1.3 billion over ten years.
