Officials are continuing to compile the impacts of the Derecho wind storm damage in Iowa. President Trump this week signed a Disaster Declaration that’s a wide sweeping measure to provide broad support. Iowa Corn Grower’s Association President Jim Greif who farms near Cedar Rapids in Linn County says the derecho flattened a lot of crops and tore up storage facilities.
He says even if growers are able to harvest any kind of corn or soybean crop and get it to market there won’t be any storage available.
Greif says while ADM and Cargill are operating in Cedar Rapids, they have no overnight storage. He says rebuilding from the storm and getting storage facilities back up will take a lot of time.
Greif says even if they can get two thirds of a crop harvested the quality won’t be very good with much of it already flattened. He says there will be a lot of mold, corn that’s not very mature with some of it broken off. On top of that he says market prices are bad.
