The Iowa Cattlemen’s Association is hosting a series of cattle marketing meetings this month starting November 10 and running through the 19th. ICA’s Director of Government Relations Cora Fox says all cattle producers are welcome to attend and they’ll be sharing information on three possible solutions to the cattle marketing problem being faced by producers.
Fox says two of the cattle market reform proposals they’ll be sharing at the meetings involve legislation from Senators Chuck Grassley, Deb Fischer and Jon Tester. She says the Grassley-Tester bill calls for the packer to purchase 50 percent of their cattle from the spot market., while Fischer’s bill also addresses price discovery and transparency.
Fox says the third possible solution comes from an NCBA working group that is a voluntary proposal.
The Northwest Iowa meetings are set for November 11, 10a.m. at the Plymouth County Extension Center in Lemars and later that night at 7p.m.. at Spencer Livestock Sales in Spencer. For information on the remaining meetings, just log onto the iacattlemen.org website.
