Iowa Cattlemen Work on Legislative Issues Including State Checkoff

Iowa Cattlemen Association leaders are working on a pair of measures in the State Legislature. Association President Dr. Phil Reemtsma says one would amend their state beef checkoff program and the other would give state approval to a federal Section 179 deduction for farm equipment. He says the update of the state beef checkoff law would resurrect the 50-cent assessment, but only after a statewide vote in favor of the program.

He says the beef check-off legislation has already been approved in the State House and now is being considered in the Senate.

As far as the Section 179 deduction, Reemtsma says the federal government has already approved the tax measure, now they’re hoping to get state officials to follow suit.

Reemtsma is hoping for movement on both of these issues sometime this week.
