The Iowa State Legislature will convene for the 2022 session on January 10 and legislators are looking at lowering the state’s income tax. Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig says tax reform and promoting renewable fuels top his list of priorities for the department as well.

He says the state legislature made some progress on lowering the property tax burden for landowners in the last session and now will turn their attention to the broader tax cuts.

Naig says his department is also working on programs to expand ag markets and protect the mainstay markets that are currently driving the state’s economy.

He says much of the heavy lifting has been done on water quality and the state’s initiative, but they will continue to build on water and soil conservation efforts and rewarding producers for climate smart practices.
