Iowa Ag Secretary on Water Quality Funding

Iowa lawmakers wrapped up the 2016 legislative session on Friday. Iowa Agriculture Secretary Bill Northey thanked legislators for the $9.6 million they provided for the State’s Water Quality Initiative, but was disappointed there wasn’t any long term funding provided.

He says the close to $10 million will be somewhat helpful for farmers and the state in tackling the current water quality issue.

However, Northey is hoping they’ll be able to get more funding for water quality improvements next session. He thinks lawmakers are understanding the water quality initiative is working, as well has having producers implement it on a voluntary basis.

The funding Iowa lawmakers provided will allow the Ag Department to continue offering farmers state cost share for new water quality practices and targeted watersheds.
