Iowa Agriculture Secretary Mike Naig and State Renewable Fuel Association Executive Director Monte Shaw are calling on the Environmental Protection Agency to follow the Renewable Fuel Standard when it comes to approving small refinery exemptions. The leaders say those SREs have undermined the RFS. Naig says the EPA has caused a great deal of demand destruction to the renewable fuels industry.
He says while the EPA has the authority to grant SREs they need to follow the law which is the RFS and not cause any destruction to it.
Iowa Renewable Fuels Association Executive Director Monte Shaw says the EPA is not required by law to automatically grant small refiner waivers.
Shaw says that if SREs are granted with eight cent RINS, then what the EPA is saying is that they’’ll always grant SREs and the hope of a true 15 billion gallon RFS is dead. He says that’s not what the President promised or what Congress intended.
