A bill that would allow states to collect sales taxes on internet purchases made by their citizens appears to be making progress in Congress.

Shawn Lyons, Executive Director of the South Dakota Retailers Association, says some of the details holding up the “Marketplace Fairness Act” are being worked out…

Lyons says some of those details involved audits and liability…

Lyons says retailers are willing to work with whatever type of bill is finally passed…

Lyons says it is estimated an internet sales tax could produce anywhere from forty five to sixty million dollars each year in South Dakota.

A competing bill that would permanently ban internet sales taxes is also making its way through Congress.
