One of Nebraska’s biggest health insurance firms is telling Catholic Health Initiatives to negotiate lower prices at its Alegent Creighton Health hospitals in the Omaha area or they will stop coverage. Along with several hospitals in Omaha the contract covers other facilities in Papillion, Schuyler, Plainview, Lincoln, Grand Island, Kearney, Nebraska City and Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Catholic Health Initiatives CEO Dr. Cliff Robertson says they are working toward a more efficient model of reimbursement.

Robertson says the crux of the issue is bigger than the insurance company is leading the public to believe.

Blue Cross Blue Shield says the hospital chain is overcharging and it will end its contract at the end of August if an agreement can’t be reached. Insurance coverage is not affected at this time.
