Input prices have risen substantially from a year ago and there continues to be a shortage of many products, including certain herbicides. This may change what farmers buy for the 2022 growing season and when they buy it.
Past North Dakota Corn Growers Association Director and Wimbledon farmer Mike Clemens says he’s stocking up on herbicides like glyphosate and glufosinate now, because they’re tough to find.
He says farmers are lining up seed due to anticipated tight supplies tied to the drought. However, he says seed prices haven’t risen like other inputs.
He says with soaring prices for inputs like fertilizer that may force some tough agronomic decisions, like planting less corn.
The highest natural gas prices since 2014 are pushing up the cost to produce many fertilizer products and adding another supply chain challenge this fall.
