This week is National Agriculture Week and Tuesday in National Ag Day. South Dakota Secretary of Agriculture Mike Jaspers says agriculture is the state’s number one industry and it has a significant impact on the entire economy.
Agriculture and agriculture’s associated industries employ more than 115,000 or one in every five South Dakotans. And he says how well the state’s economy does is tied directly to how well agriculture fares.
Jaspers says agriculture also has a large effect on several spinoff businesses and industries.
The state has 31,000 farms with an average size of just under 1400 acres. And 98 percent of farms and ranches in South Dakota are family owned and operated.
