The Douglas County Attorney is charging Orling Carrasco-Zelaya, also known as Edwin Elvir-Palma, with felony motor vehicle homicide and DUI in connection with the death of Margarito Nava-Luna Saturday. Video surveillance from earlier in the evening placed the suspect and victim together at a bar.
Nava-Luna was struck near 104th and Manderson in Omaha and Carrasco-Zelaya was arrested about fifteen minutes later. Immigration and Customs Enforcement also placed a hold on Carrasco-Zelaya. He is also charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death. This is also his third offense for DUI. Veronica Reyes is a long-time companion of Nava Luna and through an interpreter told WOWT 6 News the family is having a difficult time coping with the loss.
Carrasco-Zelaya’s criminal history shows previous arrests in Nebraska, Wisconsin and Florida. Carrasco-Zelaya is not in the U.S. legally and is from Honduras. His next court appearance is Friday in Douglas County.
