National Pork Producers Council officials are pleased U.S. Customs and Border Inspections stopped an illegal Chinese pork shipment from reaching the United States. NPPC’s Jim Monroe says the one-million pound shipment was seized at a port in New Jersey as it was suspected to be infected with African Swine Fever.
Monroe says as a result of the incident and even prior, U.S. Customs and Border Enforcement and the USDA further stepped up ASF prevention protocols.
He says prevention is their only real protection against the disease because there is no vaccine for it.
Monroe says the contraband shipment will be safely and securely destroyed in accordance with U.S. government policy. He says the shipment contained products derived from pork, such as flavorings in ramen noodles and did not include fresh meat.
