The National Farmers Union says while they share President Trump’s concerns that processing plants need to be re-opened also said they’re equally concerned with the health and well being of those plant’s workers. Iowa Farmers Union President Aaron Lehman says all steps must be taken to keep those workers safe.

He says it will take time to get those processing plants running again at the speed they need to have to maintain the nation’s food supply. Lehman also says getting that done quickly is paramount.

Lehman says it’s also critical that worker protection standards are enforced.

Lehman says processing plant workers are in close quarters and often lack access to appropriate protective equipment or paid sick leave which makes them among the most vulnerable to coronavirus.
