Once the United States has completed talks on the renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement, the next priority for the U.S. should be a deal with Japan. Iowa Farm Bureau President Craig Hill says Japan is an important market for American agriculture and with the U.S. exiting the TPP, China is influencing trade rules in the Pacific Rim and that needs to be countered.
He says the best components of TPP should be used in negotiating a bilateral deal with Japan.
As far as making a trade pact with the United Kingdom a priority, Hill says that’s a complicated issue that’s bogged down by Britain’s exit from the European Union which will take some time. He says that creates much uncertainty.
Hill is hoping U.S. trade negotiators are able to work out a solid NAFTA modernization deal so we can move forward with additional trade agreements.
