ICON Wants COOL Resolution Passed

The Independent Cattlemen of Nebraska are supporting a resolution directing the Unicameral to call on the President and Congress to defend Country of Origin Labeling.  LR 414 was offered by State Senator Al Davis and also supports consumer’s right to know where their food comes from.  ICON President Dave Wright says the measure is designed to keep opponents from dismantling COOL.

Wright says COOL is being challenged by Mexico and Canada at the WTO.  However, the rule survived a defunding effort during the farm bill discussions.  And a Court of Appeals upheld COOL based on consumers right to know and as a food safety protection measure.

LR 414 is currently sitting in the Nebraska Legislature’s Ag Committee. Wright is hoping lawmakers will schedule a vote and approve it before the end of the session.
