The Independent Cattlemen of Nebraska have submitted a proposal to a state legislative committee to reform the State’s Livestock Brand Laws. ICON members, Broken Bow Veterinarian Dr. Don Cain and Past ICON President Dave Wright have put forward what they call the Livestock Ownership Verification Act. Dr. Cain says it modernizes the present brand regulation by verifying ownership when cattle is sold.

The ICON proposal allows for multiple types of ownership identification. Cain says it brings the present brand law up to date.

He says their modernization plan takes into account registered feed yards and their needs as well.

A proposed reform to Nebraska’s state brand law was introduced last year but support for it collapsed so Ag Committee Chairman Senator Steve Halloran called for an interim study.
