ICON Passes Resolution To File Lawsuit Against Nebraska on Property Tax Law

The Independent Cattlemen of Nebraska held their 12th annual convention over the weekend in Valentine. Property tax reform topped the resolutions approved by delegates. President Dave Wright they approved a measure calling for ICON to file a lawsuit against the state challenging the constitutionality of the state’s property tax law.

Wright says they’re also backing legislation being proposed by Senator Steve Erdmann of Bayard that would provide individuals a 50-percent rebate on personal income tax to offset their property tax. He says property taxes in the state have risen dramatically over the past few years and a shift is needed to correct that imbalance.

Wright who owns a cattle rancher’s newspaper and is president of his local school board says Nebraska’s property tax system and the way it funds education is all messed up.

He says the last resolution they approved calls for the brand inspection area to cover the entire state and not just two thirds of it.
