Nebraska State Senators have put on hold LB 594, a bill that would penalize companies for deceptive beef labeling on packages and fast food menus. That measure had it passed would make it clear to consumers that plant based products are not meat. Independent Cattlemen of Nebraska Director Al Davis says his group is disappointed the measure is likely dead for this session.

He says it’s disappointing that Senators failed to protect the state’s number one industry, the cattle industry. He says it’s unlikely, Senator Carol Blood, sponsor of the measure will be able to get 33 votes needed to approve the bill. Davis says its critical the cattle industry and consumers be protected with proper labeling laws., such as LB 594.

Davis says imitation products should be labeled as what they are and not be allowed to lead consumers to believe plant based products are meat.

Opposition to Blood’s bill came from vegetarian and imitation meat groups.
