Independent Cattlemen of Nebraska members are continuing to ask legislators to approve a property tax relief bill this session. ICON Director and former State Senator Al Davis says the most likely vehicle for relief is a reworked LB 289 put forward by the Chair of the Revenue Committee. He’s hopeful they’ll get enough votes to be able to override an expected veto by the Governor.
He says with only a few weeks left, time is running down on getting a measure over the finish line.
Davis says Nebraska’s farmers and ranchers are paying more in property taxes than those in California which is the next highest state for level of property taxes.
Davis says unless the property tax issue is dealt with, there will be many producers going out of business or exiting the state.
