The Independent Cattlemen of Nebraska are asking for some changes to LB 572, the Brand Reform Bill that’s now been designated a priority bill. ICON Board member and Past President Dave Wright says the problem with the present measure is that it allows the use of radio frequency identification tags but provides no penalties for removing, damaging or replacing those id tags.

He says an amendment expected to be placed on Lb 572 would include Senator Erdman’s measure to eliminate registered feed yard status.

Wright says the other major change they want in LB 572 is to require the legislature to approve the Governor’s appointments to the Nebraska Brand Commission before they become final.

Wright says the reason it’s important to eliminate registered feed yard status is that it would restore a level playing field among cattle owners when it comes to fees for ID inspections and renewals and services because registered feed yard currently pay lower inspection fees.
