Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement leaders met this week with EPA Region 7 attorneys. ICCI discussed with the agency concerns they have with EPA’s work plan assigned to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources to bring Confined Animal feedlots in the state more in line with Clean Water Act Regulations. ICCI Organizer Evan Burger says one concern they have is lack of DNR inspections and effectiveness of those.
Burger says ICCI is concerned that DNR earlier gave a clean bill of health to a large farming operation near Keosaqua that had a spill of 1,000 gallons of liquid manure into a tributary of the Des Moines River following that inspection. Burger says EPA promised to monitor situations like those and to step in if further problems develop.
Burger says ICCI requested a meeting with EPA Region 7 administrator Karl Brooks and are hoping that will happen in April.
