ICCI Disappointed Egg Choice Bill Moves Forward in Iowa Legislature

Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement members are disappointed with state legislative passage of the egg choice bill. The measure requires grocery stores participating in the USDA’s Women’s, Infants and Children’s program to offer conventional eggs for sale if they offer cage free eggs. ICCI Organizer Jess Mazour says the legislation doesn’t really help those who participate in WIC.

While conventional eggs are usually less expensive than cage free eggs, Mazour says the real answer is to make sure WIC is properly funded so that’ s not an issue.

Mazour says the real danger is the precedent the legislation creates.

Supporters of the egg choice bill point out that Iowa is the nation’s leading egg producer and the industry provides thousands of jobs and consumes millions of bushels of Iowa corn and soybeans.
