Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement and Food and Water Watch have filed a petition with the State Supreme Court asking for a re-hearing on their lawsuit against the state. ICCI State Policy Director Adam Mason says their lawsuit said the state is not protecting the state’s waters and that needs to be corrected.

He says the state’s voluntary program called the Nutrient Reduction Management Strategy isn’t working and that the amount of polluted waters in Iowa continues to grow so tougher regulations are needed.

Mason says the Iowa Supreme Court needs to rehear the case and rule that ICCI and Food and Water Watch have standing on the issue.

Mason says over a half million Iowans get their drinking water from the Raccoon River which has been polluted from high nitrates and phosphorous levels that have caused algae bloom making the water unsafe to drink.
