ICA Says Changes Needed In Cattle Market Transparency Legislation

ICA Says Changes Needed In Cattle Market Transparency Legislation

The Iowa Cattlemen’s Association is opposed to some aspects of Nebraska Senator Deb Fischer’s Cattle Market Transparency legislation. ICA Director of Government Relations Cora Fox says they supported the original measure Fischer introduced last fall. However, they have concerns with the regional minimum negotiated cash cattle mandate contained in the re-introduced bill.

She says those regional negotiated minimums exceed what would be robust price discovery. And Fox says the lack of price discovery is more prevalent in the South.

Fox says ICA is willing to work on a compromise in the Cattle Market Transparency legislation.

Fox says transparency is needed for producers to effectively market their livestock. She adds with so many negotiated cash cattle traded in the North the Southern feeders end up benefitting from that when they make their formula contracts.
